Sometime last year I decided it would be fun to try making some banana art. Generally, folks have accepted this new fascination without question. My friends are very understanding. ;)
"I carry a banana now. Bananas are cool."
Simpsonized-Eleven design by Dean Fraser of Springfield Punx
Okay, there are a couple of commonly asked questions:
1. How do you make these?
You simply bruise the skin of the banana by scratching it with a pin, toothpick, or other sharp implement of choice. After a few minutes, the image will gradually start to appear as the lines darken.
"Wibbly-Wobbly Timey-Wimey Banana"
aka The TARBIS (Time And Relative Banana In Space)
2. Why Doctor Who?
Well, the Doctor is known to be a fan of bananas. That seemed a good enough reason at the time.
"Bananas Are Good"
4. No, wait a minute...
4. No, wait a minute...
3. Are you going to keep making these crazy things?
"Ood-nana"
We must feed... we must feed... we must feed you a banana.

Your drawings are pretty awesome Riss! I've gotta try it out now, but my banana sketches would look more like stick people LOL
awesome
sooooo great!!!!! i love the Doctor and your bananas are coool!
That is sooo cool!
Very very cool. I love to paint (recently finished a copy of Van Gogh's exploding TARDIS), but I just can't get a handle on pencil/charcoal/banana+pin sketching and shading. These are awesome! Amazingly cool. Just like fezzes. :)
The ood-nana was the best XD
Could you make one with Tennant when he had his tie around his head? Captioned "Always take this Banana to a party!"
Thanks for the lovely comments, everyone!
Julie- great idea! I'll make that my next banana project. :)
THANK YOU!!!!!! Can't wait to see a pic! XD
Fantastic! /Nine
Great work, and I hate to be pedantic but it was the 9th Doctor (Eccleston) that said "Bananas are Good" Sx
<3 Nine!
Nah, you're not being pedantic- us geeks always focus on the details. ;)
And you're right, it's the 9th doctor's line- I just happened to find that picture of 10 first.
In any case, I do owe 9 a banana! *adds to list*
Sorry, but actually, both the 9th and 10th Doctors said 'Bananas are good!' Btw, your nanapics are AMAZING!!!! :D More please! :D
I know that all the best art is transient, but it does seem a shame that your bananamasterpieces must fade away. (AHH...a bananaMASTERpiece, now I like that idea...only which Master?) How long does one of these usually last? I have enjoyed looking at them. Thanks, Jenny
@ Carol - More bananas will be coming soon! I just need to find some that are the right shape for etching...
@ Jenny - That's a great question! It really depends on the art...
The ones with finer detail & more subtle shading (like the Tennant one) tend to go bad the fastest- I think that one only had a window of a couple of hours before it started to look rather zombie-like.
Others with clearer designs (like the Ood-nana) get better with age- the Ood's suit kept getting darker, and everything else stayed pretty clear. It still only lasted about half a day, though.
The record holder is the Wibbly-Wobbly-Timey-Wimey banana. That one actually looked better the next day! I think it stuck around for 2 or 3 days before becoming Who-nana bread. :)
Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey Banana! I officially love your blog and have only been on about 2 minutes.
@ Lorelei - Thanks so much for visiting! :)
Hmm.. I really do need to post more content soon, don't I? Especially more Doctor Who randomness!
The library I work at (www.gailborden.info) is having a Doctor Who 50th Anniversary event this Saturday, and we're including a display of fanart. Would it be okay if we included a picture of one of the bananas you drew on? We would credit your username and list your blog's address.
(I'd also love to be able to list a first name, current location on Earth, and the year you first became a Whovian, but you might not wish to share this info!)
Thanks for taking the time to read this comment!
@ Catherine - What a wonderful idea- I'd be honoured if you included my banana art!
I can e-mail you the additional info you asked for (and a higher-resolution banana image, if needed)- just let me know your address. :)
