Operation: Facehugger

Ripley's been infected!

Since one Hallowe'en isn't enough for us, it's become a tradition in our group of friends to have a Christmas Eve costume party in honour of Al's birthday. The theme of the last one was 'Sci-Fi', which was an excellent choice!
Being a big Alien fan, Julie's costume of choice was 'Facehugger Ripley'. She found an excellent jump suit, and all we needed to do was create a facehugger mask...

For a comfy fit, we started with a plaster base, like this:

Once that had completely dried, we hot-glued some fabric straps to the sides, and started applying the critter to the front. For this, we used a super lightweight modelling material (I think it was Crayola's Model Magic). Julie tackled the main body of the facehugger, and I sculpted some creepy grasping fingers.

I think those fingers move every time you look away...

Hello little guy!
And yes, its tail is a rubber snake.

After letting the facehugger harden overnight, it was time to add some colour! The first coat was Julie-skin-tone, which looked suitably creepy on this alien critter...

Be sure to use a wire core for all of your appendages- we got carried away
with the modelling clay and forgot to wire the base of the tail.  A little hot glue,
and we were back in business.

For the finishing touches, we added a sickly green layer, some splotchy red shadows, and covered the whole mask in a final coat of clear gloss acrylic varnish for that creepy moist & squidgy look.

Squidge, squidge, squidge...

Operation: Facehugger was a success!

Emerald City ComiCon - Lady Cthulhu meets Mike Mignola
Hey look- it's Mike Mignola! My favourite comic artist, and a huge inspiration for me over the years. It's not every day you get to meet one of your heroes! He was absolutely lovely, and even looks a bit chuffed to have his picture taken with Lady Cthulhu... d'aww!

Emerald City ComiCon - Codex, Cthluhu, and denizens of the Whoniverse
These folks were great- we had a wonderful 'when geekdoms collide' moment! I love my fellow nerds... :) And doesn't Al make a lovely Codex?

Speaking of fellow nerds, three cheers for the best ComiCon road trip crew ever! :D

And now we just need to think of costumes for next year.. hmmm...

Vancouver Steampunk Mini-Convention

This past weekend was VSteam's Mini-Convention, and what a fun shindig it was!

The festivities were held at the lovely Barclay Manor, and the wonderful weather meant that guests were able to take over the surrounding lawns and gardens as well - much to the amusement and bewilderment of passersby!

Once more, Al and I donned our Steampunk outfits and ventured into the fray...

Stilt-walking is a great way to meet new people!

  Hello down there!

Now I need to think of an icebreaker of my own... Any suggestions for a shy lil' geek like me? O_o

Steampunk!

Hello, oh much-neglected blog!
I have plenty of projects to share, and since I'm currently in a bit of a work lull, let's see if I can get caught up...

I've had Steampunk on the brain these days... such a fun genre to play with! I love the aesthetic, the history, and of course the quirky humour behind it all.

 You've been discovered!
"You've been discovered!"

My lovely & crafty friend Al pointed me towards a local Steampunk group (VSteam), and we threw together some costumes out of treasures from our closets, loans from friends, thrift store finds, and fun handmade accessories. We made our debut at the VSteam Lords & Ladies Masquerade Ball back in May, and are now thoroughly hooked!

Currently we're working on finishing our more permanent outfits, but today's post features our costumes for the Masquerade Ball.
